The valley

The Kleinwalsertal has a population of a little under 5000 and spans over an area of 97 km². It is ca. 15 km long and 6,5 km wide. „Embraced"  by mountains you can only access the Kleinwalsertal via Germany. The "motherland" can be reached on foot via high mountain passes or a 45 minute journey by car. Over the centuries this particularity has caused severe economical problems for the native farmers, which is why the year 1891 saw the birth of a unique treaty signed between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the "German Reich" which led to a customs union between the valley and the German "Reich". Before the Euro the local currency had been the German " Mark" instead of the Austrian "Schilling". Today the status of the customs union still applies, however less stringent due to the entry into the EU of both countries Germany and Austria.

As Austria´s third largest tourist destination the Kleinwalsertal attracts thousands of tourists each year. The magnificent alpine scenery and the reliable snow conditions may account for  for this immense popularity.

Riezlern & Hirschegg

Riezlern (1089 m)
Riezlern marks the entrance to the valley. It is also the valley´s largest village with its local districts Wald, Schwende, Unterwestegg and Egg and plenty of shopping opportunities. The municipal office of the valley is also located in Riezlern and bears the name „Borough of Mittelberg", named after the valley´s oldest village. The steeple of  the church "Maria Opferung" characterises the townscape of Riezlern. Further sights are the Casino Kleinwalsertal (Austria´s smallest), the large outdoor swimming-pool and the Kanzelwand cable car. People searching for recreation will also find a spa garden.

Hirschegg (1122 m)
In the centre of the valley lies Hirschegg with its districts Au, Wäldele, Letze, Nebenwasser and Dürenboden and the picturesque church of St. Anna. The "Walserhaus" at the village square is the home of "Kleinwalsertal Tourismus" and two well worth visiting attractions: the "Bergschau 1122" and a fabulous exhibition on the history of skiing. Also in Hirschegg are the "Ifen" ski lifts and slightly above the village the protestant church called the „Kreuzkirche".

Mittelberg & Baad

Mittelberg (1215 m)
The valley´s oldest village is also the name giver for the borough of Mittelberg. Mittelberg´s  districts are Tobel, Höfle, Schwendle, Stütze and Bödmen. The church of St. Jodok is located on the highest point (1218m) of the village with the oldest spire of the Kleinwalsetral dating back to 1390. The vicinity locates the primary school, the kindergarden and the Walmendingerhorn cable car. A tennis court and an ice skating rink are based in  Bödmen. Pedestrian walkways from Schwendle lead to the Wildental and from Bödmen to the Gemtseltal.

Baad (1244 m)
Kleinwalsertal´s smallest and highest spot is Baad. This is also the valley´s cul-de-sac. Further access is only possible by foot, as Baad is entirely surrounded by mountains. Baad is the starting point for various mountain hikes to the Bärgunttal, Derratal and Starzeltal. Three streams emanate from  here: the Bärguntbach, the Derrabach along with the Durabach build the Breitach river. Slightly elevated lies the church of St. Martin´s. Baad owes it´s name to a sulphur spring, which sadly no longer exists.
